When a cat eats less, contact your veterinary team promptly for advice, especially if food is refused or the cat seems unwell. Accurate measurement can help that conversation, but do not wait for another meal or a complete diary before calling. A cat eating treats may still be taking in too little food.

Identify what was actually eaten

Record the usual food and normal amount if known. Measure the portion offered and what remains, noting whether another animal could have reached it. Food disappearing from a shared bowl cannot establish which cat ate.

Give the cat a quiet protected meal space using the familiar food and a clean bowl. Do not confine the cat as punishment or repeatedly present new foods to obtain a reassuring response. Follow the clinic's feeding instructions if a medical plan is already in place.

Include changes beyond the bowl

Tell the clinic about vomiting, drooling, dropped food, altered drinking, litter-box changes, hiding, energy, and apparent pain. Say when you last know the cat ate normally and distinguish that from a guess.

In a hypothetical household with a new puppy, a cat may hesitate to cross the kitchen to eat. Moving the meal to a calm room can remove that obstacle, but it does not prove the appetite problem is behavioural. Arrange veterinary advice while making the practical adjustment.

Give another caregiver the same information

Use a short shared entry stating the time, food, amount offered, amount left, and who observed it. Keep prescribed medication instructions separate and current. Ask the clinic what to do if a dose depends on eating and the cat refuses the meal.

Do not syringe food or water into a resisting cat without explicit veterinary instruction and training. Record anything given rather than trying several remedies whose effects will be hard to explain.

At the follow-up, start with whether intake and general condition have improved or worsened. A careful record is useful only if it leads to timely action when the cat's needs change.

Know the professional boundary

Contact a veterinarian promptly if your cat refuses all food, eats much less than normal, or appears unwell. Do not wait for visible weight loss. Cats can deteriorate when they do not take in enough food, particularly those who are overweight or have existing health conditions. Kittens, senior cats, pregnant cats, and cats with diabetes, kidney disease, or previous digestive trouble deserve an especially low threshold for veterinary advice.

If the clinic asks you to observe at home, share the exact amounts eaten, water use, litter-box changes, recent household events, and photos or short videos of concerning behaviour. A veterinarian is the person who can assess medical causes and advise on nutrition or assisted feeding. A qualified feline behaviour professional or trainer can help with routines, confidence, and household stress only after illness and pain have been considered. Training is not a substitute for medical assessment.

The kindest first response is calm and practical: reduce pressure around meals, keep a clear record, and act early if the change is substantial or accompanied by other signs. That gives a nervous cat a fair chance to settle and gives an unwell cat the timely care she needs.

Keep the reporting units consistent

Use the same scale or measuring method where practical and include the food's name and package size. A quarter of a large can is not the same amount as a quarter of a small pouch. If weighing leftovers, note anything that could distort the estimate, such as spilled food or water added to the meal. Do not convert uncertainty into a precise percentage. Tell the clinic what is known so it can interpret the history alongside the examination.
